The world we live in is not just complicated for everyone; it is also difficult and biassed towards gender. It is a theatre where curtains go up and down with the rhythm of challenges, and women stand centre stage, wrestling with the weight of societal expectations and personal difficulties. While we often speak highly of women, do we truly appreciate what it takes to be one?

As we know, this month is March, and International Women's Day is just around the corner. In this blog, let's view the world through the lens of a woman and reflect on the state of women's mental health.

Women’s Life Journey

A life of a woman is woven with threads of diverse experience, societal expectations, limitations, norms, personal aspirations, and career pursuits. In this pursuit many women find themselves juggling roles as daughters, sisters, mothers, professionals, doctors, teachers, engineers, managers, and more. The goals and dreams we forge when we are young are always limitless because we are told that the sky's the limit. What is never mentioned is to reach the sky, you need to create resources yourself, and the world is not always fair.

This woman learns as she reaches and crosses different touchpoints of life marked by triumphs, setbacks, and alongside a battle of self-discovery.

Women's Mental Health: Shedding Light on Silent Struggles

Women worldwide often experience more serious mental health issues than men. They grapple with societal pressure, expectations, and norms that can impact their mental well-being adversely being compared to men. Myths surrounding women and adherence to cultural and societal norms of beauty, success, motherhood can be frustrating and have a profound effect on mental health.

Throughout life, from childhood to teenage to adulthood, women face various emotions and challenges that are often misunderstood. Such as;

  • Women often face misconceptions of being egoistic, arrogant, or moody, primarily due to hormonal fluctuations. These fluctuations can adversely impact their personality, contributing to conditions like depression, anxiety, and other psychological factors.
  • Reproductive health poses significant challenges for women, including issues such as infertility, pregnancy complications, and postpartum depression. These challenges can have a profound impact on their mental well-being.
  • Juggling multiple roles in the face of societal expectations. This constant balancing challenge can lead to heightened stress, burnout, and various other mental health problems.
  • The struggle to work-life balance adds another layer of complexity to women's challenges.
  • Unfortunately, women globally face disproportionate levels of gender-based violence, harassment, and inequalities.
  • Unequal opportunities further compound these issues, resulting in long-lasting consequences that persist throughout their lives.

Women combat numerous real-life challenges daily without expressing complaints. Even when not feeling well, women often set aside their struggles and continue with life, highlighting exceptional strength. Amidst all of this, they sometimes overlook their own vulnerability. They may not fully understand what they are going through but intuitively sense the weight of their emotional burden. Despite projecting strength, women frequently struggle with mental health issues silently.

Living with these challenges is not easy and can result in neglect of one's mental well-being. They may be dealing with mental conditions that affect them emotionally, spiritually, and mentally, such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, and depersonalization-derealization disorder. They should be considered as superheroes for their exceptional strength.

Prioritising Mental Well-being

Women empowerment centres on prioritising mental well-being. By valuing mental health, we empower women to overcome societal challenges and barriers, nurturing resilience. This fosters a thriving society where the central focus on women's mental well-being is prioritised. Recognizing and supporting women's mental health is crucial, allowing them to break free from the silent struggles they endure daily.

“There’s something so special about a woman who dominates in a man’s world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and the nerve to never take no for an answer.”

In a world marked by diversity and complexity, women shows a remarkable power through every phase of life. It is not an exaggeration to say that a woman is a powerful creation by God, possessing the potential to conquer any challenge and emerge stronger than ever.

She is the power

Regardless of every challenge a woman faces, she never gives up and emerges resilient and powerful. This power allows her to navigate a labyrinth of adversity, not only confronting each challenge but doing so with determination and courage. Despite every inequality, she never surrenders, and that is her true power.

She is not defined by what she goes through; her power lies in her ability to overcome whatever comes her way. She shatters ceilings, breaks barriers, speaks for her rights, challenges biases, and fights battles from workplaces to home. She does everything needed to redefine and reclaim her strength. While she may get tired and experience mental conditions, what she refuses to accept is being silenced. A woman does not demand to be superior; she just seeks justice and equality, which she truly deserves.

“Women don’t need to find a voice, they have a voice, and they need to feel empowered to use it, and people need to be encouraged to listen.”
- Meghan Markle
